Cupping stimulates the release of nitric oxide enhancing blood circulation. Nitric oxide draws blood to the surface of the skin, increasing the blood flow to the area.
Cupping is used to:
Relieve muscle tension,
Promote cell repair
Increase the formation of new connective tissues
Improve the regeneration of blood vessels
Reduce inflammation
Improve local anaerobic metabolism.
For long term pain after an injury, cupping is used to help loosen scar tissue to increase mobility and reduce pain reactions.
Gua sha is an ancient healing technique in which the skin is scraped with a rounded edged tool. Gua sha is used to relieve stagnation which is causing pain and stretch out the fascia under the skin, whilst improving circulation to the area.
Gua sha can leave tiny red, painless dots on the skins surface (petechiae). They demonstrate the level of stagnation in the area and show that circulation has been increased. They are a natural and positive effect of the treatment.
Tui Na is a form of Chinese massage which focusses upon the same treatment principles as acupuncture - moving Qi through the body to restore balance by moving stagnation, clearing excess and nourishing areas of deficiency.
