Health Insurance and Acupuncture - Getting your Money’s Worth

6 February 2025

Acupuncture has gained recognition in the UK for the impact it can have upon a multitude of health conditions. If you are considering acupuncture treatment and wish to make the most of your medical insurance cover, it is essential to understand the role of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the insurance companies they work with.

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC)

The BAcC is the UK‘s leading regulatory body for traditional acupuncture. Membership with the BAcC requires adherence to high professional standards, including comprehensive, high level training, ongoing professional development, and a strict code of ethics. Many insurance providers recognize BAcC membership as a mark of quality and competence in acupuncture practice.

Several private health insurers in the UK offer coverage for acupuncture treatments, particularly when performed by practitioners registered with the BAcC. However, coverage details can vary significantly between providers and individual policies. Below is an overview of some insurers and their general policies regarding acupuncture:

AXA PPP Healthcare: Offers a health cash plan where patients pay the BAcC practitioner and receive reimbursement from AXA PPP, typically around £60 per session (I charge £55 at the time of writing).

Benenden Health: Allows self-referral and they will look in to each claim is individually and they choose to pay theit claims on a case-by-case basis.

Bupa: Provides recognition for members of the BAcC through their cash plans, such as their health additions cash plan.

Health Shield: Fully covers acupuncture under their health cash plan, with reimbursement amounts ranging from £60 to £655 per year, depending on your policy. Pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Simplyhealth: Covers acupuncture treatments provided by practitioners who are members of the BAcC.

Steps you can take to Ensure Coverage

1. Verify Practitioner Credentials: Ensure that your chosen acupuncturist is a member of the BAcC, as many insurers require this for coverage.

2. Consult Your Insurance Provider: Contact your insurer to confirm whether your policy includes acupuncture treatment, any referral requirements, and the extent of coverage.

3. Obtain Necessary Referrals: Some insurers require a referral from a GP or specialist before approving acupuncture treatments.

4. Understand Policy Limitations: Be aware of any exclusions, such as coverage limitations for pre-existing or chronic conditions.

5. Keep Detailed Records: Maintain thorough documentation of treatments and receipts, as insurers often require these for reimbursement.

By taking these steps and consulting your insurance provider and visiting a qualified BAcC registered acupuncturist, you can effectively navigate the process of using medical insurance to cover your acupuncture treatments - so make the most of the insurance you are paying for! health insurance
